Reha's Report

Dear Scott School Families,

I want to wish you all a wonderful and safe Spring Break. If you are traveling, DPS is encouraging families to follow CDC guidelines which includes having your child tested and quarantining the week after returning from your travels. Please also contact your child's teacher for assignments as necessary to keep up on missed instruction. Please be sure to let our office know if your child will miss school due to traveling, virus exposure, or testing positive. Our goal is to keep our school open for in person instruction, and it will take a team effort to make that possible.

Sincerely,

Linda Reha

Scott School Principal

DPS Student Screener

Families are expected to go through this screener every morning before their child leaves for school when students are in the building for in person instruction. Please remember to do this so we all do our part to support a healthy environment at school. Attached is a printable version of the form that you may elect to print for easy access each morning.

DPS STUDENT SCREENER

Spring Testing & Read By Grade Three Law

We are patiently awaiting guidance from the Michigan Department of Education on whether or not M-STEP testing and the Read By Grade Three Law are still in effect this year. Students whose Acadience composite score was below benchmark in the fall and winter will be bringing home an Individual Reading Improvement Plan (IRIP) document for parents to review. It is important that the signature page is completed and returned to school because this is part of the Read by Grade Three Law expectations. The IRIP contains information that families have already been made aware of since benchmark and progress monitoring reports have been sent home all year. Also, families received communication in the form of a letter throughout the year if their child qualified for reading intervention.

NWEA Testing is scheduled for April 12th-16th Unless your child is ill or in quarantine, please make sure your child is at school this week to take the reading and math NWEA Map assessments. We will also be Acadience testing in April. M-STEP testing is scheduled for May 3rd-11th if it remains an expectation of the Michigan Department of Education.

March is Reading Month

Camp Read S'more Image

March is Reading Month came to an end today and students celebrated to our theme of Camp Read S'more by dressing like happy campers and participating in a classroom read-a-thon. It was a fun month enjoyed by all.

Neighbor Niceties - Please don't block driveways, the Parking Lot, & Turn Right

Scott is a neighborhood school, and we have many wonderful neighbors who support our school. However, a concern that has been communicated many times this year is vehicles blocking driveways at the beginning and end of the day when drop off and pick up occurs. There are more students dropped off and picked up than typical this year which creates additional traffic on Wilson Street. Please be respectful of our neighbors by refraining from idling (or parking) your car in front of any driveway while waiting in the parent loop line. Allowing space for driveway access for all property owners is important and helps us maintain positive relations with our friendly neighbors and demonstrates respectful driver etiquette. Also, vehicles cannot stop in the intersection where the stop sign is located south of your building. We are fortunate to have support from our local law enforcement to keep our students, community, and school safe, so please know these traffic violations could result in police issuing tickets. In addition, please follow road rules by parking in legal spots when needing to enter the building. There are an increasing number of drop off and pick up by vehicles not using the loop. This is strongly discouraged. Please follow our driving guidelines so pick up and drop off tunes are safe for everyone by preventing an unfortunate accident from occurring and helping us keep good relations with our neighborhood community members. Vehicles exiting the loop must make a righthand turn only. Lastly, please keep in mind that our staff need to be on time to work to teach and support your child, so please allow staff access to the staff parking lot when they arrive to work each day. Thank you for your attention to these concern areas.

We are pleased to be able to adjust our drop off time to 7:55 a.m. this year to help keep traffic flow moving. Students dropped off in the loop are to walk to the front of the building and social distance in the cafeteria before the first bell rings.

Lunch has been offered at school as of Monday, March 8, 2021 for in-person elementary students. Students will be asked in their classroom each day if they would like lunch. The meals will be delivered to your student's classroom.

The lunch menu is one choice per day during the rest of this school year.

The meal is delivered with one vegetable, one fruit & choice of chocolate or 1% white milk. If your child has a food allergy please contact Sandy Leach at leachsand@dewittschools.net.

Journeys Reading Textbooks

Please help us keep track of and care for our Journeys reading textbooks. These are newer purchases and cost the district a good chunk of change. Students should be using textbook 2 now, so if you have textbook 1 at your house still, please send it back to school with your child to give to his/her teacher. Thank you!

Vestibule Hours

Now that we are returning to in person instruction, the vestibule hours at Scott School will be adjusted to 7:45 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. on days we have school.

Pick Up Loop Vehicle Student Name Signs

Please be sure to place a large sign in your window or dash with your child's first and last name if you use the pick up loop after school. This helps us say your child's name over our speaker system and be efficient in keeping traffic moving through our loop. Thanks for your help! This is especially important when we return to full in person instruction since there will be many more students waiting at the loop.

School Pictures - Retakes & for Virtual Students

Camera Image

School pictures will be on Wednesday, April 7th from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Herbison Woods for all K-5 remote learning students (drop in any time that day). Please read the flyer for details. Parents/Guardians may pick up their child and take them to Herbison Woods on April 7th for picture retakes for those students who missed Picture Day on March 11th. School transportation will not be available, and unfortunately, no other picture retake days will be offered this year. In addition, there will not be a yearbook this year due to the influx of picture days that Lifetouch is accommodating through the remainder of the year and their limited staff due to COVID.

Attendance

If your child is going to be "absent" and miss school, even if they are a online learner, please be sure to call our attendance line at 517-668-3458. We are required to take attendance even when students are learning remotely, so we want to be sure to account for our students and excuse absences in Infinite Campus. If your child is learning remotely, you should also communicate absences to your child's teacher. We care about our students and worry about them when they aren't in class or online on days they are supposed to be.
