Dear Scott School Families,
We were thrilled that the weather cooperated so we could have our outside Halloween parade today, and it was exciting to have so many families in attendance to see the creative and amazing costumes our students and staff wore. It was an exciting day and students demonstrated personal best behavior while enjoying the festivities. Thank you, families, for supporting our respectful and safe Halloween costume expectations.
Next week we are hosting two nights of Parent-Teacher Conferences. The first evening, Wednesday, 11/5, is designated for in person conferences, and the second evening, Thursday, 11/6, is designated for online conferences. We moved to this format a few years ago to accommodate busy family schedules. However, if you would like an in person conference and all the time slots are filled with your child's teacher, please reach out to the teacher and request an in person conference on night two. We want to be flexible to meet your needs.
All my best,
Linda Reha
Scott School Principal
Our Dean of Students, Mrs. Cochrane, highlights other examples from our Capturing Kids Hearts training that students and staff follow to create a warm and inviting school-wide environment at Scott School. Be sure to read all about it in this edition of Dean's Desk.
Each week every classroom at Scott School has a Panther Pride drawing from all Panther Pride slips earned by students for demonstrating respectful, responsible, safe, and bucketfilling behavior. Lucky drawing winners are invited to a special Panther Pride event at the end of the month with Mrs. Reha and Mrs. Schwarz, which was a Panther Pride Store where students were able to choose a prize to keep.
Reece is in Mrs. Kolanek's 2nd grade class. She was invited to our October Panther Pride Store.
Eamonn is in Mr. Whitfield's 3rd grade class. He was invited to our October Panther Pride Store.
Last school year, DPS began the important task of updating our elementary report cards to better align with the Michigan Common Core Standards and to provide parents with more specific information about their student's school performance. Read more about the updates that have been made on this attached document from 2024-2025 that was shared with families. You can expect fall report cards to be available for viewing in Infinite Campus on Monday, November 24th.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are next week, and an email with a SignUp Genius link was shared with families on Friday, October 24 to choose a date/format and time that works best with your schedule. Below are details about our upcoming conferences. We are excited to see families next week and discuss student progress!
In Person Conferences: Nov. 5 from 4-7:30 p.m.
Virtual Conferences: Nov. 6 from 4-7:30 p.m.
We are scheduled for our Fall Scholastic Book Fair on November 3-7. Students will be assigned to a particular day to attend the book fair during school with their classmates. Our book fair will also be open from 4-7:30 p.m. on November 5, which is the first night of Parent/Teacher Conferences at Scott.
It's time to order a 2025-26 yearbook to capture memories of your child's experiences at Scott School. Check out this flyer for more details, and be sure to order before the April 19th deadline!
Our annual Fun Run fundraiser was successful and great fun for our students. Thank you to families and friends who donated to this fundraising event that will cover costs of field trips, transportation to and from trips, and positive behavior support incentives for students. This year, our Fun Run raised $32,566. THANK YOU!!
Second grade students traveled to the Country Mill Farm in Charlotte to learn about the life cycle of an apple and the importance of bees in pollination. They also got to pick an apple, pumpkin, and enjoy homemade cider and donuts! An educational and fun filled day for all!
Below is a communication from Kevin Robydek that will be going out to all DPS families this afternoon regarding free school meals for the current school year.
Dear DPS Families,
We’re excited to share some wonderful news! The Michigan Legislature has approved the 2025–2026 state budget, which includes continued funding for the Michigan School Meals Program. This means that all DeWitt Public Schools students will continue to receive free breakfast and lunch this school year, regardless of household income.
While this funding remains in place, the State of Michigan now requires every family to complete the Education Benefits Form each year. This form is quick and easy to fill out, and it plays a crucial role in helping our district qualify for important state and federal funding. These funds support classroom instruction, technology, student support services, staffing, and our school meal programs.
You can now easily complete the Education Benefits Form online at dewitt.familyportal.cloud simply click “Apply for Benefits” to get started. Please complete the form as soon as possible to help us secure essential funding that supports classroom instruction, technology, student services, and more. Even though all students receive free meals, submitting this form is important for maintaining these valuable programs.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to reach out to our Food Service Director, Megan Haase, at meganhaase@dewittschools.net.
Thank you for partnering with us to maintain these valuable programs and ensure that every student has access to healthy meals and strong educational support.
Sincerely,
Kevin Robydek, Ed.S., Superintendent
DeWitt Public Schools will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch to students this year. Although this is a cut that legislators are considering within the education budget that has not yet been approved, DPS is committed to offering this important food program to students with hopes this continues to be funded by our state. Menus can be found here and will be updated soon.
We are grateful to families and our community members who donate healthy, no nut snacks to classrooms and our snack pantry which also provides our students brain and body fuel throughout the day. Your partnership in removing hunger as a barrier to learning and child development makes a lifelong impact. Thank you!
Pita Way in DeWitt sure knows how to give back, and Scott School staff benefited in a big way with a free luncheon sponsored by this local, favorite restaurant. Thank you for choosing our school to receive a delicious lunch and enjoy your Mediterranean cuisine. We are grateful!
Below is a message from our DeWitt PTA.

We’re doing things differently this year. Instead of asking for monetary donations, we’re relying on our only fundraiser of the year (Pasta for the Panthers) to fund meals for staff during conferences. However, if you’d like to contribute snacks or drinks to help stock the break rooms, please use the links below:

The Walking School Bus (WSB) is another way for non-bus students at Schavey and Scott Schools to get to and from school. It allows parents to skip the drop-off and pick-up lines and provides students a little activity with a short walk before and/or after school. In the mornings, you can drop them off at the off-campus location, and a Walking School Bus coordinator or volunteer will walk alongside the students from this location to school. The end of the school day works just the same, but in reverse. A coordinator or volunteer will walk students from school to a designated location to be picked up by a parent or guardian. Safety vests and ponchos are provided to each student participant. Walking schedules are fully customizable to your students schedule. If interested in this program, please see our flyer for more information.
Our Scott Walking School Bus students use the foot bridge to walk to and from school that comes from Logan Street. Please avoid using this area for drop off or pick up if you transport your child to school, and instead use our car loop, which is designed for this purpose. Systems for arrival to and from school are in place for everyone's safety. Please follow them.
Don't forget to complete our DPS ICHAT process as soon as possible if you plan to volunteer at any time throughout the year. This background screener is required annually and takes only a few minutes to complete. Thank you for taking time to check this off your list so you're ready to join the fun at Scott School!
Student safety is a priority. Please bring proper identification each time your child is picked up from school. Here are some ways adults picking up students can be identified:
Physical ID (ie. driver's license)
Personal ID by office staff
Other identification proof such as utility bills or other statements, credit card, etc., AND answer personal information that we have in Infinite Campus (ie. phone number, child's birthdate, etc.)
There are some Scott students who have health-threatening nut allergies in our building. Scott School is a 'No Nut' building. Pack items that do not contain nuts for your child's lunch and snack. It is critically important that we provide a safe learning environment for all students, and your help with this is needed and appreciated. Please always contact your child's teacher if you have a concern about an allergy or other health condition related to your child that they should be aware of. Also, if your child has a medical need, including food or other allergies, don't forget to update your child's Medical Management Plan by completing and submitting the district forms to the office before school starts so we can follow protocols to keep your child safe.
Please be sure to review our DPS Illness Chart for guidance on when a student should and should not be at school when your child is not feeling well.
In order for Scott School personnel to administer medication (including cough drops) to your child, a parent guardian must:
Submit a completed district medication form to our office.
Be sure all medications are brought to and stored in our office.
Be sure prescription medication is in its original container accompanied with a physician’s signature.
Be sure non-prescription medication is in its original container accompanied by a parent’s signature.
Please communicate with your child's teacher if he/she takes medication daily at school.
If your child has a medical condition, please be sure to complete a Medical Management Plan for your child and turn it in at the office.
Medication and other medical forms can be found on our DeWitt Public Schools website.
Our school social worker, Mrs. Schwarz, is always willing to assist students and families in any way possible. In addition to working closely with your child's teacher, consider reaching out to her if you have questions or need support. She is truly amazing at what she does! She can be reached at 517-668-3446 or schwarzdea@dewittschools.net.
When your child is absent, please call the Scott School Attendance line: 517-668-3458. Substitute cannot access a teacher's email, so please call the office when your child is going to be absent, will be dropped off or picked up outside of regular school hours, or has a transportation switch. In addition, someone is managing the phones in the office, and even if you need to leave a message, it will be retrieved immediately during school hours. Please call before 3:00 pm, for all after school changes.
