Dear Scott School Families,
Our last big on site experience will be Field Day the last week of school Please read further down in this newsletter about guidelines to help your child have a successful Field Day experience and protocols to follow if you or any adult family member plans to attend to watch on this special day. It is important to adhere to the visitor guidelines for they help us put on and maintain a safe school environment.
It has been a pleasure to serve students, families, and staff this year, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue to serve as Scott School principal for the 2025-26 school year. To our families moving on to Herbison Woods, good luck to you. I will miss your child and family. To our families returning to Scott, have a great summer. I will see you in the fall, and we can start a new chapter in the history books of Scott School. Thank you all for your support and trusting me and our team with your student. It has truly been a joy and a gift.
With gratitude,
Linda Reha
Scott School Principal
Here's the last edition of the Dean's Desk newsletter for the school year. This one highlights summer resources and ideas for preventing what's called the summer slide. Maintaining a learning routine over the summer helps students maintain and often even grow their academic skills.

Please check the Lost & Found table in our vestibule to discover items you and your child have been searching for so you can reunite with them. Any unclaimed items will be donated after Tuesday, June 9th.
In addition, if your child has medication in our office, please be sure to pick it up. All medication left after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9th will be properly disposed of.
Also, there is a 'Free Table' of items located in our vestibule that families are welcome to adopt. The next time you're in the building, take a gander of what's there, and considering rehoming items. We'd love these things to continue to be used.
Calling all families: We'd love to see you at our June 1st Field Day as a volunteer or a spectator or both! Read more details about this fun, end of the year event on this flyer.
We'd love to have families join us, and here's what to do when you arrive:
Visit the vestibule at the front of the building and sign in on a visitor document.
Pick up and wear a visitor sticker in a visible area on your shirt to support our safe school practices.
Be sure to supervise young children if they come with you, and please make sure they do not play on the playground equipment since we will have recess periods during Field Day, and our play structures are designed for Scott School age children.
To help prepare students for fun in the sun, please have your child:
Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.
Apply sunscreen before school (highly recommended if possible).
Bring sunglasses and/or a hat to wear.
Bring a change of clothing (there are water stations so students may get wet).
Bring a filled water bottle to stay hydrated.
Be sure to check out the plethora of family resources in this Summer Reading Resources doc to support literacy over the summer including events, websites, articles, videos, parent reading tips, read together ideas, and so much more. It contains a ton of ideas for maintaining or starting reading routines at home. Don't miss out on taking a look at it. This is a must read!
Our very own DeWitt District Library is hosting various summer reading opportunities for students of all ages and families too! Participating in the fun challenges and activity days is a great way to keep reading skills up over the summer months while having a great time doing it. Check out what's planned to go with their Unearth A Story summer reading theme HERE.
Here's another resource to consider if you're looking for a wellness opportunity for your family.
There's a free mile race for kids on June 2nd starting at 6:30 p.m. at the DeWitt High School track. Check out this flyer for details on how to sign your child up for this fun event.
Don't forget to complete our DPS ICHAT process as soon as possible if you plan to volunteer at any time throughout the year. This background screener is required annually and takes only a few minutes to complete. Thank you for taking time to check this off your list so you're ready to join the fun at Scott School!
Student safety is a priority. Please bring proper identification each time your child is picked up from school. Here are some ways adults picking up students can be identified:
Physical ID (ie. driver's license)
Personal ID by office staff
Other identification proof such as utility bills or other statements, credit card, etc., AND answer personal information that we have in Infinite Campus (ie. phone number, child's birthdate, etc.)
There are some Scott students who have health-threatening nut allergies in our building. Scott School is a 'No Nut' building. Pack items that do not contain nuts for your child's lunch and snack. It is critically important that we provide a safe learning environment for all students, and your help with this is needed and appreciated. Please always contact your child's teacher if you have a concern about an allergy or other health condition related to your child that they should be aware of. Also, if your child has a medical need, including food or other allergies, don't forget to update your child's Medical Management Plan by completing and submitting the district forms to the office before school starts so we can follow protocols to keep your child safe.
Please be sure to review our DPS Illness Chart for guidance on when a student should and should not be at school when your child is not feeling well.
In order for Scott School personnel to administer medication (including cough drops) to your child, a parent guardian must:
Submit a completed district medication form to our office.
Be sure all medications are brought to and stored in our office.
Be sure prescription medication is in its original container accompanied with a physician’s signature.
Be sure non-prescription medication is in its original container accompanied by a parent’s signature.
Please communicate with your child's teacher if he/she takes medication daily at school.
If your child has a medical condition, please be sure to complete a Medical Management Plan for your child and turn it in at the office.
Medication and other medical forms can be found on our DeWitt Public Schools website.
Our school social worker, Mrs. Schwarz, is always willing to assist students and families in any way possible. In addition to working closely with your child's teacher, consider reaching out to her if you have questions or need support. She is truly amazing at what she does! She can be reached at 517-668-3446 or schwarzdea@dewittschools.net.
When your child is absent, please call the Scott School Attendance line: 517-668-3458. Substitute cannot access a teacher's email, so please call the office when your child is going to be absent, will be dropped off or picked up outside of regular school hours, or has a transportation switch. In addition, someone is managing the phones in the office, and even if you need to leave a message, it will be retrieved immediately during school hours. Please call before 3:00 pm, for all after school changes.
